Join the Capitol Choices discussions in person
Capitol Choices meets at the Arlington County (Virginia) Central Library, 1015 N. Quincy Street (directions). We are only a few blocks from the Virginia Square Metro Station and we have plenty of parking if you drive (don't forget to pick up your parking permit at the reference desk).
Meetings are scheduled from 9:30 - 12:30 at the Central Library. Several of us bring coffee and chat from 9-9:30, and
there's occasionally a group that goes off to lunch afterwards.
The meeting schedule for 2008 is:
Join the Capitol Choices Listservs
Capitol Choices welcomes your participation in our monthly book discussions (see the schedule). If you are unable to meet with us in person, you may join one of our two listserves to stay informed.
Broadcast-only listserv
This listserv is designed to keep members briefly updated on Capitol Choices discussions. Listserv members receive two emails during the months that Capitol Choices meets (see the schedule). The first lists the titles up for discussion at the meeting. The second, sent approximately a week after each meeting, summarizes the discussion of the nominated books. Subscribers cannot post to this listserv.
To join the broadcast-only listserve, send an email message to subscriptions@capitolchoices.org with the words "subscribe capitolchoices-update your_full_name" in the body of the message.
Or click here to join.
Working listserv
This listserve is designed to keep active members updated on nominations and email discussions of nominations as they occur. Listserv members may nominate titles and post comments to this listerv. Traffic is light, ranging from just one or two messages a day, to a dozen or more when the discussion heats up.
To join the worksing listserv, send an email message to subscriptions@capitolchoices.org with the words "subscribe capch your_full_name" in the body of the message. Or click here to join.
Contact the listkeeper at cparr@crrl.org with questions or suggestions.
Become a reading group member
Capitol Choices offers various ways for you to take part in our discussions. Casual participants can drop in on meetings as they wish, and either lurk or post on the working listserv. But if you're interested in taking a more active role, you may become a reading group member.
Reading group members are expected to:
- read widely and nominate any eligible book they think worthy for the list;
- read every book nominated in their reading group;
- participate actively by joining the discussion either at meetings or on the listserv, or both; and
- vote. Only reading group members are eligible to vote.
Each reading group has a facilitator who acts as a resource for reading group members. They do their best to get books to people in their groups who can't get hold of them and let reading group members know when they have copies to lend. They lead the discussion after the ballots twice a year to discuss the results.
To join a reading group, email the following people with your contact information (institution, mailing address, phone and email):
Submit Books for Consideration
The Capitol Choices committee considers books and audio books that are published for readers up through age sixteen during the current calendar year. We welcome submissions of books that publishers would like us to consider.
