Emo lesbian Australian Ava is trying to find her place, and Wilkinson ponders that so well. Included is fun banter between the young people in stage crew at Ava's new school, one of the groups that's a possibility for her to belong to. The mess that Ava gets herself into while she's figuring out who she is, and the way it's all resolved is very realistic, but only for somebody brave and in charge of her destiny. Fourteen and Up. Elissa Webber

Australian emo lesbian Ava is trying to find her place in the world.  The mess she gets herself into while she's figuring out who she is, and the way it's all resolved is realistic, but only because she is brave and takes charge of her destiny.

My 13 y.o. son definitely

My 13 y.o. son definitely thought this was realistic (including the guy who is still a virgin).

Positive Comments:
  • The story captures the confusion that teens experience about sexuality and clothes.
  • These liberal parents readily accept of their daughter’s announcement that she is lesbian.
  • This is an apt portrayal of a teenager “trying on” personas to decide who she is really is.
  • The teen tells people what she wants them to hear rather than what they may want to hear.
  • The story reveals all her dilemmas, but she seems in charge of her own destiny as she gets herself in and out of trouble.
Observations:
  • A middle school reader thought the story was realistic.
Concerns:
  • The secondary story of Jen seems superficial and too easy in its contrast with the protagonist.
  • The protagonist’s development is unmotivated and does not make sense.
  • That the “player” who is a “big man on campus” remains a virgin is completely unrealistic.
  • The complete reversal of the "frenemy" character at the end of the book is unrealistic.
